Both British girls reached round two of the Australian Open. Elena Baltacha as expected had a tough match against Jamie Hampton of the USA who had already won three qualifying matches to make the main draw. Baltacha lost her serve at the start of the match and although she broke back soon after Hampton took the set 6-3. The second set Bally was again always trailing until the 9th game when a superb break of service set up The British number one to take the set. The tide had turned and Elena went 3-1 up in the final set, but as usual nothing is ever easy and Baltacha was broken back. She then had to serve to stay in the match at 5-4 down which she did in style and then broke Hamptons serve to lead 6-5. Under pressure to defend her ranking points from last year Baltacha served out the match to set up a mouth watering tie against Justine Henin.
Keothavong had a more straight forward win again fellow qualifier Arina Rodionova. The win means Anne sohould move back into the worlds top 100 ranked women in a few weeks time and she could still go further into the tounrnament.
