WTA Birmingham: Match Predictions

A Hlavackova to beat M Lucic: Could be a close encounter between these two players. Lucic is a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, but is now in the later stages of her career and we all know she has underachieved for various reasons. The Croat though is showing signs she still has a few years to become a top 50 player again and the grass courts should help build her confidence. Hlavackova fresh from her suprise French Open doubles success will also be confident and has won her matches comfortably this week. The Czech girl qualfied for Wimbledon last year and lost to Zvonareva in the 2nd round so she is pretty decent on grass. I think she may just take this one.

Sabine Lisicki to beat T Paszek. The Austrian was let off the hook against Mirza in the first round, and I feel this match is Lisicki's to lose. The German is desperate to re-join Julia Goerges and Andrea Petkovic in the world top 20 ranks and it is tournaments like this where she should be looking to reach the later stages in order to do so. Good value in the German here.

M Erakovic to beat S Errani: Erakovic loves the grass. The Kiwi can compete at the highest level on this surface and although the rankings gap is high, Erakovic will feel confident against clay courter Errani. The Italian though is a battler and will fight for everything so Erakovic will have to be determined. This could be very close but the value is with Erakovic to win.

R Marino to beat A Ivanovic - This could be closer than the bookies think. Ivanovic can be so hit and miss and Marino who is now ranked in the top 50 can take advantage of this. The Canadian has a big serve which is a great weapon on grass and is unjustifiably such a big outsider in this match. Ivanovic may well win, but it will be closer than what the bookies think.
