What a quarter final match up! The Battle of the Swiss. Roger Federer takes on his young compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the Australian Open Semi finals.
Federer has failed to impress so far this tournament. After an easy first round win, the defending champion lost 2 sets to Gilles Simon of France in the second round and also struggled with Tommy Robredo in the last 16. Now Simon was in form so i can appreciateb that was a difficult match, but to struggle against Robredo isn't the Federer we all know and love. He seems to be beatable...... So bring forward his opponent, the Swiss number two and friend Stanislas Wawrinka. Wawrinka is on a winning run having won the chennai Open already this month. His last two wins in this tournament where a straight sets 3rd round win against Gael Monfils and a 4th round demolishion of Andy Roddick. There's no doubt about it - Wawrinka is playing well. His backhand is ferocious and he plays long rallies well. If Wawrinka was up against anyone other than Federer I would have him as the favourite, but will he be able to win three sets against his ultimate hero? I don't think so. He needs a good start and to get Federer on the backfoot if not Federer could steam roll Stanislas. Head to head Federer leads 6-1 and Wawrinkas one win was on clay. I think the ocassion will get the better of Wawrinka and Federer will win, whether it be in 3, 4 or 5 sets.
