B Tomic @ 1.60 to beat F Verdasco - The Aussie teenager has to start favourite here at quite a nice price. He did well here last year, and although he has lots of points to defend, Tomic is a year old and has more experience than he did 12 months ago. He has had a good start to the year and his powerful ground strokes will cause Fernando lots of problems. Verdasco has also done well here in the past, but is a shadow of his former self. His serve is less consistent and he lacks the penetration needed to cause Tomic too many problems. He is still a quality player and is capable of winning the match, but I just don't see him holding any form over a long match.... The crowd will get behind Bernard and the Aussie should win this, probably in 4 sets.
J-I Chela @ 1.75 to beat M Russell - Battle of 2 veterans here. Chela is known for his clay court skills, but is also uselful on hardcourts, he can still make great shots and should have enough to cope with Russell. Michael has been around for a long time, but has never broken through to the upper ranks. The American loves hardcourts and can compete well, however again over best of 5 sets I think he will struggle to hold any consistency against Chela. Although this has not been his best tournament of late, the Argentinian has wins over a young Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt in Melbourne and took Pete Sampras to 4 sets way back in 2002. I tihnk he will take this match.
More matches to come!
