BETHANIE-MATTEK SANDS V JULIA GOERGES

Tricky match to call this one! Bethanie Mattek Sands is finally coming into some form and the rest she had at the start of the year has really helped get rejuventated. She has played in a lot of qualifying matches this year, trying to get her ranking high enough to enter WTA tournaments directly and it is working. She is back up to 71 in the world. She loves hardcourts and defeated young American qualifier Irina Falco in the 1st round. She rencently took Kim Clijsters to 3 sets in Montreal showing how far her game has come in the last few months. She will be back in the worlds top 50 in no time at all and could push up even further if she stays injury free. She can get angry with herself at times and can lose concentration mid-match, but i think she is a tough competitor. Julia Goerges has had a very solid year and moved up to 41 in the world. The German won her first WTA in Bad Gastein, Austria in July. She has solid ground strokes and although favours the clay surface, she can play on any surface. The head to head is 1 all with Goerges winning in 2008 on the hardcourts in Memphis and Mattek-Sands gaining revenge this year with a titanic battle in Charleston. I think this will probably go to 3 sets again with the American just pipping the German once again.

PREDICTION: Mattek-Sands to win
