WTA Madrid: Wozniacki, Schiavone and Sharapova all through safely

Three of the top seeds moved through to round two in the Madrid clay court tournament today.

World number one Caroline Wozniacki never looked in trouble easing to a straight sets victory over Japanese hope Ayumi Morita. The Dane had too much power for Morita, who is not a natural clay court player.

Francesca Schiavone overcame a break of serve in the first set to break straight back against Shaui Peng on China and went on to win a tight battle against the world number 30. Peng who has won already an incredible 30 matches on the WTA tour this year was solid enough but couldn't find the points when she needed and French Open champion Schiavone will fight all the way. The Italian won 7-5 7-6.

Maria Sharapova struggled early on in her match with Dutch girl Arantxa Rus. The battle of the blondes looked one sided as Rus took the first set 6-2. However Sharapova stormed back to take the next two 6-3 6-2.

Marion Bartoli the 8th seed had a good win over Romanian danger Simona Halep.
