Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova continue to impress in womens doubles. The suprise Wimbledon champions have coasted through the US Open draw defeating top seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta before knocking out Cara Black and Anastasia Rodionova in the semis to reach their second Grand Slam final in a row. They have only been playing together for less than 6 months! But the partnership is working well! Very well!! Petrova is still a force in the singles court but is looking like she could dominate the doubles rankings when she retires from singles, if she chooses to that is! She has won many doubles tournaments and has partnered some of the best doubles players such as Sam Stosur and now Liezel Huber. Her best doubles year was 2004 when she had a fantastic partnership with the USA's Meghan Shaugnessy. They won the 2004 Season ending Championships. Her run to this years US Open final is her best doubles achievement so far and I am sure there is more to come. Her partner Liezel Huber is the world number one doubles player. She is a class act on the doubles court and on Thursday won the mixed tournament with partner Bob Bryan. She won this tournament in 2008 with long term partner Cara Black and then in 2009 reached the final but came up against the formidable Williams sisters. Huber has since split with Cara and has been testing out new partnerships throughout the year. In Petrova I think she has made a good choice. These two players are strong and powerful. Petrovas big serving and ground strokes combined with Hubers delicacy at the net make them a dangerous partnership. They already have good wins in this tournament against Raymond/Stubbs, the Bondarenko sisters and Chan/Zheng in the semis. Whilst youth is definately favours the King/Shvedova partnership in this match, I think the knowledge on court and the immense power of Petrova/Huber will be difficult to handle.
PREDICTION:
Huber/Petrova to win the US Open
